Sirshasana, Headstand, is one of those postures that can inspire a yoga practitioner to advance in their practice just to get into this pose. First it is the simple act of being able to stand on your head, but then it becomes a practice in itself. To be stable in this posture, connect with the rhythm of your breath whilst feeling the complete balance that the posture brings, gives many benefits as well as boosting the practice as a whole.
As part of our practice, we gradually introduce it to the more regular, intermediate level students at our yoga centre in Lennox Head and in our Byron Bay Yoga Retreats. One of the most important things about the Headstand practice is that you must have enough strength and flexibility to be able to get into the posture steadily and safely without props. This is why it has taken us more than 12 months to really start introducing the practice of Headstand.
Combined with strengthening of the body during yoga asana classes and specific exercises to build the strength and flexibility for Headstand, it also requires confidence of mind (positive thinking). We highly recommend guidance from an experienced teacher to provide a completely safe environment for the practice.
Here we give you the basic 8 steps which are taught by us and in the Sivananda practice to get into Sirshasana:
Think: "my arms are my legs". These are the instructions that Swami Vishnudevananda used to help students to focus on the tripod base formed by their elbows and hands in this pose.
Take advantage of the upcoming Headstand Workshop where you can further develop your practice into this exhilarating posture, or learn the exercises to help you achieve the goal. With highly experienced guidance, you can feel confident that you are practicing correctly and safely. Come join us on Saturday 21st September, 2 - 3.45pm, at the Yoga White Lotus yoga centre in Lennox Head. Read more...
There are of course counter indications which you should definitely read before starting the practice. I hope this has been helpful. Hopefully I'll see you soon at the yoga centre in Lennox Head for some Headstand!
